Surgical Remodeling
When a heart attack occurs in the left lower pumping chamber of the heart (left ventricle), a scar forms. The scarred area becomes thin and bulges out with each beat. The bulged area is called an aneurysm. This change, coupled with other heart damage you may have, can result in heart failure. Initially, your heart is able to handle pumping harder. However, over time your left ventricle will become larger than normal and pump less effectively.
During surgical remodeling, the dead area of the heart tissue and aneurysm is removed, and the left ventricle is returned to a more normal shape. The goal of this surgery is to improve the ability of your heart to pump blood.
